Course Syllabus
TEXTBOOK: Variety or Texts and material on the Civil War
Course Description: History of the Civil War offers an in-depth study of the causes, effects, tactics, battles, and participate of the civil war. Course availability depends on enrollment.
Course objectives: What you will be able to do by the end of this course.
1. Students will identify the social, political, environmental and military factors that lead to the Civil War.
2. Students will Compare and Contrast the North and South and analyze the advantages & Disadvantages each had in the war.
3. Students will examine the early military and political strategies of the war including the battles of Fort Sumter and 1st Manassas
4. Students will Compare and Contrast the leadership chain of command for the Union and Confederacy.
5. Students will examine the impact of the war on the civilian population and its impact on the home front.
6. Students will research and prepare a presentation that discusses specific military campaigns and battles and the strategies that were employed in these military engagements and campaigns.
7. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the Social, Political and Military factors that led to the end of the war and Reconstruction.
COURSE OUTLINE: FIRST Quarter
1. Unit I- Pre Civil War: Compare North and South, Look at the institution of slavery and what events lead to the war.
2. Unit II Beginning of the war: Fort Sumter and Manassas, Leaders North and South, Early War in Missouri, Civil War combat and medicine and the soldiers life.
COURSE OUTLINE: SECOND Quarter
3. Unit III: Middle part of the War: battles of Antietam and Gettysburg, emancipation proclamation, you will present your power points over the battle.
4. Unit IV: End of War and Reconstruction: Reconstruction Amendments, Lincoln’s assassination, Lincoln’s plan compared to the radical republican, rise of southern resistance and the lost cause myth-micro unit civil rights.
GRADING POLICY: Breakdown of Points
1. 125-175 Points = Tests
2. 200 Points= Final Exam
3. 200 Points in Project (Civil War PowerPoint ) for the Semester
4. 125 Points Note Book Check at the end of every Unit
5. 15-20 Points for Opening Activities= 200 Points per year
6. 3 simulations over the year= 200points
7. 30 Points for your Study guide=150 Points Semester
8. 10 Weekly Participation Points-Prepared and an active participant in Points per Quarter
9. PAPERS HANDED IN WITHOUT A NAME WILL RECEIVE ZERO POINTS.
10. Latework is not accepted unless for “special Circumstances”.
11. Cell Phones will not be allowed in class, they need to be face down on your desk or put up.
12. The Grading Scale and attendance policy will follow what is outlined in the student handbook.
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be in the classroom when the bell rings with all materials: Books, Class folder, paper, pen, pencil Opening Activity, Civil War Notebook and notes every day in class. Failure to bring these items will result in the loss of your daily participation points.
2. Be attentive in class. Disruptions and sleeping will not be accepted: if you choose to sleep in my class you can lose your seating privileges.
3. RESPECT:
a. The student does not disrupt activities or lecture
b. To your fellow classmates all opinions should be treated with respect, regardless of whether or not you agree with that opinion. You will have a chance to share your opinion: avoid putdowns or condescending remarks.
4. Be Positive! Refrain from profanity, racial and ethnic slurs, jokes, any language that is crude, degrading, or inappropriate for a school classroom-this will result in a referral
5. Continued failure to meet these expectations will lead to consequences starting with a warning and lecture, then a Discipline clipboard and morning detention, and finally an office referral. A blatant violation such as disrespect may lead to an immediate office referral.
6. PLAGIARISM & CHEATING will never be tolerated. A student that knowingly hands in homework that is not their own will receive a zero. A student that cheats during a test will receive a zero. In addition to receiving a zero for a homework assignment or test, students will be referred to the principal’s office for cheating and parents contacted. For further offenses see student handbook.
7. Do not bring a drink, food, or gum to my classroom you will be asked to throw it away-continues abuses will result in a referral.
Cell Phone Policy
a. Guided Notes: Several times during the year you will take fill in notes over the material; these notes need to be saved in your notebook.
b. Homework: these will come in the form of Opening Activities, Open Activities will be assigned at the beginning of class and are due first of the hour on the due date.
c. Civil War Notebook: This is a folder or Binder where you will keep all of your Notes, Tests, Study guides and your Syllabus. This will be examined by the teacher for a homework grade that is worth 100 Points at the end of the quarter.
d. Tests: Tests will usually be at the end of each unit, we will review the day before the exam with your Study Guide. Your Study Guide needs to be handed in Test Day and is worth 50 Points
e. Class Projects: We will have One project this semester a power point and poster project over a particular battle.

- Do not have your cellphones out during class or in my classroom, texting, calling or using social networks will result in your cellphone being confiscated and taken to the office.
- Cell Phone confiscation means you will be put in ISS.
- On certain days you will be allowed to use the media on cellphones, I will alert you when you need to bring your cellphones.
